Meet some of your future colleagues
Wondering what it is like to work at NIOM? Below you can meet some of our colleagues, who tell you about NIOM as a workplace.
Solveig Uvsløkk, Senior Engineer and ph.d. student
"I work with research on cells and bacteria in the laboratory. I've been at NIOM for over ten years, where I wrote both my bachelor's and master's thesis, and now I'm doing my PhD looking at how nicotine affects cells and bacteria. The best thing about the job is the strong academic and social environment - here we support each other, instead of competing. I appreciate the freedom to be independent and to pursue my projects, while at the same time receiving good support and development opportunities. At NIOM, I get to use my curiosity, learn from talented colleagues and be part of the whole research process."

Silvio Uhlig, Senior Scientist
“I am a researcher specializing in organic-analytical chemistry at NIOM. One of the best aspects of my job is the ability to fully dedicate myself to research without excessive administrative tasks or meetings. I have access to state-of-the-art facilities, which makes my work both engaging and efficient. Additionally, I deeply appreciate the positive work environment and the collaboration with highly skilled colleagues. What I value most is the opportunity to work without distractions and truly immerse myself in my research.”

Aida Mulic, professor and Senior Scientist
“I really appreciate the interdisciplinary and collaborative culture here. My favorite aspect of NIOM is being surrounded by colleagues from diverse professional backgrounds who share the same goal of advancing knowledge and research. As a dentist, I can clearly see how our research impacts patient care, making the work highly meaningful. I also value the freedom to explore my curiosity and develop professionally, with less administrative work than at universities. Collaborating with guest researchers and supervising students helps me stay up to date and gain new perspectives. Additionally, our extensive instrument park, equipped with advanced technology, shortens the path from idea to implementation and results, contributing to a dynamic research environment.”

Magnus Anderson, Engineer
“To me, NIOM seemed like an opportunity to explore materials technology in a new and exciting context. What I find motivating about what we do here is that the results directly contribute to helping patients in a situation where the outcome of the treatment has a significant impact on their daily lives and wellbeing. As an engineer, I work both with the practical execution of tests in research and test activities on behalf of manufacturers, as well as the theoretical foundation. I also collaborate with the researchers in all phases of research projects, which is what we do most of here at NIOM. So far, I am enjoying both the scientific and technical aspects of the work and that we are a relatively small workplace where you have the opportunity to get to know everyone.”

Ellen Bruzell, Senior Scientist
I work as a senior researcher at NIOM and have been here since 2001. My favourite thing is that I always have the opportunity to learn something new and be curious. My work focuses on photobiology - the interaction between optical radiation and biological systems - as well as risk assessment for the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) and EFSA, among others. I enjoy the breadth of my work and the close co-operation with both Norwegian and international scientific communities. Decisions are made quickly, and as a small organisation, NIOM offers a great deal of freedom and professional replenishment on a daily basis.
