Ikram Aqel Salim has joined NIOM as a visiting researcher for six months. Originally from Iraq, she holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Ajman University (UAE), a master’s degree in Advanced Endodontics from the University of Siena (Italy), and is currently pursuing her PhD in cariology and restorative dentistry at the University of Turku in Finland.
At NIOM, her research will focus on evaluating the properties and bond strength of bioactive materials to root dentin—an area crucial to improving the longevity and success of endodontic treatments.
“Understanding how these materials interact with dental tissues can directly influence treatment outcomes in restorative dentistry,” she explains.
Ikram says that NIOM’s strong reputation and commitment to high-quality research were key motivators in applying.
“I was very excited about the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary work and learn from experts in different fields,” she says.
Her first impression of NIOM has been overwhelmingly positive:
“I was welcomed into a vibrant and collaborative environment that truly fosters innovation. The access to advanced technologies and methods is exceptional, and I look forward to contributing to impactful research.”
In addition to expanding her knowledge in material sciences, she hopes the stay will lead to new collaborations and connections within the Nordic dental research community.
