Originally from Kaarina, Finland, Saara Sirkiä holds a Doctor of Odontology and works as both a dentist and a researcher. She divides her time between the University of Turku and clinical work in Southwest Finland Wellbeing Services County.

At NIOM, she is focusing on the development and testing of hydrogels with inorganic components to be used as bone filling materials in the oral cavity.

“My work here involves developing new materials, modifying formulations, and performing both physicochemical and mechanical testing,” she explains.

Sirkiä says she was encouraged to apply for a guest researcher stay at NIOM due to the institute’s reputation for high-quality research and strong academic environment.

“I wanted to deepen my understanding of research methods and gain experience with new techniques and equipment. Collaborating with experienced researchers at NIOM is a great opportunity,” she says.

So far, she has appreciated the supportive work environment and access to well-equipped laboratories.

“People are very kind and helpful here, and the facilities are excellent for research.”

Her stay at NIOM runs from June through November 2025.
