Dental adhesive systems are central to restorative dentistry and have been in clinical use since the 1980s. They are applied in a wide range of treatments and are designed to create strong bonds between tooth substance and restorative materials.

But adhesives are also chemically complex. Ingredients such as acids and monomers may have toxic potential and can in some cases trigger allergic reactions. In a new webinar, NIOM’s Frode Staxrud discusses findings from a recent scientific article co-authored with Jan T. Samuelsen (NIOM) and Jon E. Dahl.

The webinar outlines:

  • Key steps in adhesive application and bonding mechanisms
  • What is known about the biological effects of common adhesive ingredients
  • How exposure risks can be minimized for patients and dental personnel

Simple preventive measures such as efficient suction, ventilation, and use of rubber dam can reduce exposure. Knowledge of composition and handling is therefore essential for safe and effective clinical use.
