In this study we have investigated the early adhesion of S. aureusS. mitis and the attachment of primary human dermal fibroblasts on smooth and SiO2 nanopatterned surfaces displaying the same surface chemistry. For both S. aureus and S. mitis, adhesion was decreased on nanostructured compared to smooth surfaces and correlated with surface coverage. For human dermal fibroblasts we found a reduced number of focal adhesions for cells cultured on the nanostructured part of the bi-functional surfaces for both 4 and 24 h. We attribute these findings to the limited contact points between the cells and the substrate provided by the nanoparticles.
