Advanced course in dental ceramics

Nordic Institute of Dental Materials (NIOM) is arranging a course on bioceramic engineering with a focus on ceramic materials used in dentistry. 

What will you learn?  

  • How crystal structure and chemical bonding give ceramics their properties
  • Behaviors of fine (micro- or nano-sized) powders, granulates and powder dispersion 
  • Driving forces for sintering and commonly used sintering methods in dentistry
  • Forming methods for different geometric designs of ceramic components
  • How to analyze the fracture surface of a ceramic material 
  • Optical properties of ceramics 
  • Mechanical properties of ceramics, including knowledge about ISO-standards for mechanical testing
  • Fracture toughening mechanisms, such as transformation toughening and crack deflection
  • Hands-on lab sessions


Who is it intended for?
Ph.D. students, researchers and specialists in prosthetic dentistry (materials science) with interest in ceramic materials

Time and place
The course consists of 9 days divided into three gatherings hosted at NIOM in Oslo: 

  • 16th to 18th of October 2024
  • 20th to 22nd of November 2024 
  • 15th to 17th of January 2025
