Polymer based biomaterials are often used in dentistry. Polymers are employed for tooth fillings, dentin and enamel adhesives, and prosthodontic materials. They are also used in orthodontics, for occlusal splints and mouth guards, and for maxillofacial prostheses. Comprehensive knowledge about both composition and properties of the materials is important, and chemical and physical characterization is required. NIOM possesses several analytical instruments for the chemical characterization of dental polymeric materials. We use methods such as chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS and LC/MS-MS), and FT-IR-spectroscopy to determine the composition of both cured and uncured materials. The substances leaching from polymerized biomaterials are also analysed. These data are important for the evaluation of the biocompatibility of the dental materials. The physical characterization of dental polymeric biomaterials includes determination of mechanical properties, and of appearance and surface properties. Bonding between different materials, such as between different polymer based materials, between polymers and alloys or ceramics, and between polymers and the tooth (dentin and enamel), is of great clinical importance. Ongoing projects determine the bond quality of relining dentures, and bonding of crown and bridge or veneering materials to metal frames.
