NIOM studies as background for BBC programme

A programme on BBC Radio 4 has discussed the use of aluminium bronze as a dental casting alloy. The problem with such alloys is that, while they look like dental gold, they corrode more readily and release metallic elements to a much greater degree than other dental alloys.  Studies from NIOM and from our guest researcher Berit Ardlin (Umeå) are cited. Jan Olsson announced as the new head of NIOM.

Professor Olsson comes to NIOM after an eminent academic career at the University of Gothenburg. He takes up his appointment part-time from January 12, and full-time from March 1. Read more.

NIOM becomes a Nordic Co-operative Body

On 1st January  2010 NIOM’s status will change from a Nordic Institute to a Nordic Co-operative Body. This means that ownership of NIOM is transferred from the Nordic Council of Ministers to UniRand a.s. (an arm of the University of Oslo) and the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care Services to create a proprietary company, Nordisk Institutt for Odontologisk Materialer AS (NIOM as). NIOM as will continue the work of NIOM with the same staff and professional services. The Nordic co-operation will be maintained through a contract for financial support from the NMR, and the Nordic countries will continue to be represented on the Board of NIOM as.
