Study examines oral health among former elite athletes
A new study led by the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences aims to assess the physical, mental and social health of former elite athletes. As part of the project, oral health is also being investigated, with contributions from Aida Mulic at NIOM and Julie Haabeth Brox at the University of Oslo.

“We know that elite sport can involve stresses that may also affect dental health. This study gives us the opportunity to investigate this more systematically,” says Mulic.
To enable comparison with former elite athletes, a broad reference group is now being recruited from the general population. The study is open to anyone who has not been an elite athlete, regardless of their level of physical activity.

Participants complete digital questionnaires and may also take part in examinations, including health screening and dental check-ups.
The study is a collaboration between the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, NIOM, the Faculty of Dentistry (UiO), and Kompetansesenteret Tannhelse Midt (TkMidt) . The results will contribute to increased knowledge about the link between sport and oral health and may provide a stronger basis for prevention and follow-up.
